CASKS

Maderia Wood Finish

Originating from a volcanic island 600 miles from Africa, Madiera casks hold 680 litres of wine, matured for at least 5 years; they could be up to 100 years old and are made from European oak - probably from Portugal. Madiera wine is high in acidity and has a rich caramelised taste, so its effect on Glenmorangie is to oxidise it a little more and give it a caramelised effect.

Port Wood Finish

The port pipes used for Glenmorangie are made from French Limousin oak, hold about 550 litres and are usually about 20 years old. This means they have been cycled about 4 times with port (4/5 years each time). This finish moves Glenmorangie away from vanilla to oxidation and tannic.

Sherry Wood Finish

Sherry Wood casks hold a minimum of 500 litres and are usually made from Spanish oak. These casks oxidise Glenmorangie, making it stronger and more fragrant. There are two types of sherry wood casks, each of which work slightly differently: Oloroso casks have held strong wine (14%+) and the maturation process is physical, whereas with fino casks (rare in Scotland) the maturation is microbiological as yeast grows in the sherry wine every summer.
