This is supposed to have been a happy accident when someone opened the wrong door and erroneuously vatted some 12 year old Glen Moray with some near 20 year old Ardbeg. The Book, Ardbeg: A Peaty Provenance, quotes Hamish Torrie as saying the Ardbeg that was mixed was meant to supply the "17", but unfortunately had to be creatively made into an alternative expression.
The Serendipity was offered to Committee members in the form of a booklet sent out on April 1st, 2005. An Italian collector recently sent me some scans of the booklet, and we have made them into pictures that can be seen below.
NOTE: If, during 2004, some old Ardbeg were going to the bottling facility or vatting tank, it would have been closer to 23 or 24 years old. Since Ardbeg was closed in early 1981, the only old stock that would have gone into the 17 would have been from the pre-closure stock.
